Most have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday but today was Giving Tuesday: a national event aimed to help encourage donations and volunteerism.

Here in the North State, several non-profit organizations teamed up to celebrate this event by cleaning up downtown Chico.

“This is our way of trying to be part of the solution,” said Beth Porter, Esplanade House Chico program director. “We have about 55 individuals out here giving back to our community.”

One of the volunteers was Shannon Hurd. She has lived in the Esplanade House Chico—a transitional housing program for the homeless—for the past eight months. And said this is her way of expresses pride for her community.

“We want to show the business owners and the community that we do care, we want to give back,” Hurd said. “There’s so many beautiful things in Chico and we want to keep it clean.”
