The summer swim season got underway this weekend as the Chico Aquajets hosted the annual Sprint Pentathlon and Swim Clinic.
Eleven teams, including Chico, Orland and Paradise, took part in the event and more than 250 swimmers plunged into the pool at the Dwight Brinson Swim Center in Durham.
In the Sprint Pentathlon, each swimmer races at 50 yards in each of the four strokes -- freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly -- as well as in a 100-yard individual medley. At the end of the pentathlon, swimmers are ranked by their combined times for all five events.
"It's a one day fun meet for us," said Chico Aquajets Head Coach Betsy Aird. "We have kids that are training hard up to 5-hours a day and then we have a bunch of little ones, 5, 6, 7-year-olds that are here, this is their first meet and we're building up to Junior Olympics and our North Valley championships at the end of the summer."
