Redding residents don't have to drive far this year to enjoy a winter wonderland.
At the Market Street Promenade in Downtown, skaters are lacing up to take a loop around.
"I'm just like thinking, wow there's actually a skating rink in Redding, because I didn't know it could be cold enough for an ice skating rink, so I'm really excited," Sarah Harris said.
Ice skates are involved, but this rink isn't exactly made of ice.
Instead, event coordinators have come up with a drought-friendly option.
"It's like a plastic base and then they lay a liquid glide over the top to act as ice, but it's not ice. It's very eco-friendly, it basically supports itself, we don't need any electricity to keep it cold," said Viva Downtown event coordinator Joe Shipman.
That's not stopping first-time skaters from getting out there.
"Well, it's fun and even though it's not real ice, it still feels like real ice," Koriene Grootveld said.
