Good news tonight for many Chico parents. A plan to put Chico sixth graders in Junior High in the Fall of 2015 is not going to happen, at least for now. The announcement was confirmed today and made in public at a meeting in Chico last night and at a 13th District P-T-A meeting Tuesday evening.
Trustees with the Chico Unified School District had voted to transform the District's Junior High schools into middle schools with sixth graders joining 7th and 8th graders. Therefore, Elementary schools would have no longer include 6th grade classes.
Many parents oppose the plan, saying 11 and 12 year olds are just too young to start Junior High and are not at the same maturity level. They say it's all about money. But District officials say it's being done to transition into Common Core and the plan would better utilize the space at Junior High Schools.
The District has bumped the plan back to the Fall of 2016, because more time is needed to get facilities ready.
