A Sutter County Sheriff's Deputy fired at a suspect who allegedly drew a handgun from his waistband as he was running from California Highway Patrol Officers.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers attempted to pull over a Jeep after it ran a red light at Poole Avenue and Starr Drive just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The driver of the jeep did not stop for about a quarter mile and when he did, three suspects jumped out and fled in separate directions. The CHP officer stayed in his patrol car and followed the driver, who ran behind the Sutter County Jail.
As the suspect ran behind the jail, an uninvolved Sutter County Sheriff's Deputy saw the pursuit in progress and witnessed the suspect pull a handgun from his waistband. The deputy fired at the suspect when he saw the handgun, and the suspect who was not hit then surrendered to authorities.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Clorenzo Griffin, was booked into the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, conspiracy, possession of marijuana for sale, resisting an officer, robbery and transporting marijuana.
Following the shooting and arrest of Griffin, officers found a significant amount of marijuana in the suspect's Jeep, and then located the other two suspects Andre Jamison, 40, and Rodney Rackley Jr., 24 nearby.
All three men, from Florida, allegedly stole marijuana from a Yuba City resident at gun point before the CHP officer pulled them over.
