A Butte County sheriff's deputy accused of child molestation has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

37-year-old Thomas Michael Sylvia, who used to work as a bailiff, has been charged for allegedly committing lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. A trial date is expected to be set on March 5.

Sylvia was arrested in November following a child molestation investigation by the Chico Police Department.

Police investigators say Sylvia molested an 11-year-old girl during an overnight stay at his home.

Sylvia was originally hired as a Butte County deputy in 2005 and was removed from his duties in May 2014 when the sheriff's office was informed of the allegations and subsequent investigation.
