A wildfire burning west of Weaverville has grown to 180 acres and difficult wind conditions are challenging firefighters.
The blaze, which broke out around 2 p.m., has prompted the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office to order mandatory evacuations for the west side of Oregon Mountain down to Highway 299, while an advisory evacuation order is in place for Steiner Flat Road in Douglas City.
California Highway Patrol officers have closed Oregon Street at Democrat Gulch to the top of Oregon Mountain.
The fire is currently burning in a northwest direction and an increase in winds continues to cause the fire to spot ahead of itself, further challenging firefighters.
The so called Democrat Fire had burned 180 acres as of 6:15 p.m. and is threatening at least one structure and communication towers on Oregon Mountain. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
The Red Cross has established an evacuation shelter at the First Baptist Church 1261 S. Main Street in Weaverville.
