The victims in this weekend's deck collapse at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve in Forest Ranch. Five members of the Audubon Society were hospitalized after the deck they were hospitalized after the deck they were standing on collapsed and fell to the ground.
The deck is attached to a ranch house that serves as a Conference Center for visitors to a four-thousand acre Ecological Reserve owned by the Chico State Research Foundation.
One of the injured was airlifted by helicopter after briefly losing consciousness, but all five have since been released from the hospital.
Chico State Public Affairs Director Joe Wills says, "Despite the terrible end to their day, those out at the reserve were still being upbeat about it and added, that it says more about them as individuals than anything."
Officials are still investigating why the deck collapsed. For now the entire conference center is closed to the public.
