The Shasta County District Attorney's Office has confirmed that tests show the man accused of killing his ex's dog and then feeding it to her, is at least not guilty of the latter.

Ryan Watenpaugh, 34, has been charged with 10 felonies, including corporal injury to a spouse and animal cruelty. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is set to stand trial beginning March 10.

Watenpaugh's ex-girlfriend told investigators he sent her a text message days after her Pomeranian "Bear" went missing, implying that he had fed her the dog as part of a meal he'd made for the two of them. According to the district attorney's office tests have shown that the meat served during the meal in question was actually pork.

Watenpaugh has claimed he never killed the dog, telling police he found it dead after it had been struck by a vehicle. He remains out of custody on bail.
