Cyber Attack at CSU, Chico

A series of cyber attacks at Chico State have forced University officials to change some key passwords.

They say the "phishing" attacks compromised the email accounts of seven employees and that the hackers tried to access the accounts of nearly 50 others.

They were traced to sources in Britain and The Netherlands, which appeared credible on the surface and fooled the staff members into revealing their account credentials.

University Public Affairs Director Joe Wills told Action News Now, "We have students, faculty and staff doing creative, interesting things with a lot of devices, so there are opportunities there, but we also have an information security effort and we have staff that are very knowledgable about this."

The accounts that were compromised were taken over by the attacker, who used them to generate thousands of spam and phishing emails .

University officials say there was no financial loss and the problem is now resolved.
