Chico State students returned to class a week earlier than usual for the spring semester.
The university reduced break from five weeks to four.
The duration of the semester stays the same, but classes will end earlier.
Campus officials say it has to do with separating graduation weekend and Memorial Day weekend. These are typically one in the same.
Officials say it will create an economic boost, enable families to enjoy both weekends, and let staff have a long Memorial Day weekend.
Campus Spokesman Joe Wills said Chico State has added approximately 300 more students this spring than last spring, that brings the total to around 1,000 new students this semester.
