Crews from a variety of major utilities teamed up Friday to bring down a big tree threatening major communication lines running through Bidwell Park in Chico.
The problem was a 80-foot high sycamore tree along the banks of Big Chico Creek near Bidwell's Hooker Oak Park. A Pacific Gas and Electric Co. line inspection crew Friday morning noticed the leaning tree was about to give way at the base because of rain-soaked soil and high creek flows. If the tree had fallen then, it would have taken out utility lines for power, cable TV and two fiber-optic lines serving Verizon and AT&T customers.
Crews were eventually able to tie lines to the sycamore and pull it over and down to the ground, away from the utility lines just before noon.
