On May 18, the Oroville Police Department investigated the grand theft of an outboard boat motor taken from John's Marine Service in Oroville. The suspect cut through the perimeter chain link fence at approximately 12:45 a.m. and unbolted a Mercury 15-horsepower outboard motor from an aluminum boat that was parked at the business for repair. The theft was captured on video surveillance and the total loss was $4000.00.
On May 20, officers located a Sacramento Craigslist posting for a matching boat motor for sale first posted on May 18. On May 21 Oroville Police detectives responded to the Craiglslist posting and later met with the suspect at his residence in the 400 block of Ford Avenue in Gridley during in a sting operation. Undercover detectives with the assistance of Gridley Police officers arrived under the disguise to purchase the motor for $1300.00 and confirmed the motor was in fact the same stolen in Oroville on May 18.
The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Ramon Santana Jr. of Gridley. Santana is out on bail on another stolen property charge and is headed to Butte County Superior Court in June for sentencing. Santana was booked into Butte County Jail on charges of possession of stolen property and committing a felony while out on bail.
