The will of the people prevails, at least for now. Chico City Councilmember Randall Stone announced Tuesday he will rescind his vote on the two roundabouts proposed for the Esplanade. Stone notified City Manager Mark Orme that he no longer supports the roundabouts. The vote reversal would change from 4 to 3 in favor of the roundabouts to 3 to 4, changing the outcome.
Last week the council votes on the Esplanade Improvement Project. The decision created an uproar in Chico, prompting a community group to begin a petition drive.
City Councilman Andrew Coolidge voted against the roundabouts, citing concern about the historical nature of the Esplanade. Hundreds of community members banded to fight the decision. If Stone cannot officially rescind his vote, they have less than a month to collect at least 45 hundred signatures and it could go to a special vote within the next few months.
