Concern over dumped cars in Sac River, but law enforcement says too dangerous to pull out

Tehama County Sheriff's officials say they're getting a lot of calls about a car underwater in the Sacramento River, but it's been there for years.

In fact, Action News Now has learned there are actually four cars in that general area near the Tehama campus of Shasta College.

Assistant Tehama County Sheriff Phil Johnston says some of them have been there for up to five years.

The red vehicle that's still visible was dumped by its owners after they were told it was being repossessed.
Johnston says pulling them out can pose a real safety issue.

"We have vehicles dumped in the Sacramento River all the time," said Johnston. "But we have to choose what's practical and we're not going to put our divers at risk because of a vehicle that is really not our responsibility."

Johnston says after a few calls this morning, he put a boat in the water to investigate, but no cars or leaks were found.
