The Colusa County Sheriff's Office is transitioning from rescue operations to recovery efforts after a 28-year-old woman fell into a canal south of Grimes Tuesday night.
A man called the Sheriff's Office and reported his wife missing near Wilkins Slough, near Highway 45 around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Before calling 9-1-1 the man told investigators he had been fishing with his wife and young child, he said he left the area to find a new fishing spot with the child. Five minutes later he returned to where his wife was, but couldn't find her.
The man told rescue crews he found his wife's fishing pole and retrieved one of her shoes from the canal.
The Colusa County Sheriff's Office and the Meridian Fire Department conducted an extensive search and rescue using a CHP helicopter, but search efforts were called off around midnight, with rescue crews deeming the incident a possible drowning.
Crews resumed search efforts Wednesday morning, but the woman's body has not been recovered.
The incident remains under investigation.
