College students swept into ocean in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - The Coast Guard is searching for two college students who were swept off a rock and into the ocean off the Central California coast.

Authorities say the University of California, Santa Cruz students were on a rock jutting into the ocean at a Santa Cruz beach around 5 p.m. Monday when they were struck by a wave.

State parks Public Safety Superintendent Bill Wolcott tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel a third student was also swept off the rock, but was able to make it back to shore.

A Coast Guard helicopter searched for the missing pair through the night. The two students have been identified as a 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman. Their names have not been released.
