Hector Arana called it a miracle.
Despite many of his vehicles being destroyed in the Clover Fire, his house survived.
“That burns right here,” Arana said, pointing to a charred piece of wood located within a foot from his house. “Lucky that stopped otherwise the whole thing would have gone up.”
But not everyone was as lucky as Arana. His longtime friend William Romero lost his house and all of his possessions except a motorcycle.
“It was quick, quick, quick,” Romero said of the fire. “It was racing through the gullies; there was no stopping it.”
Despite losing his home and most of his belongings, Romero said he will find a way to rise from the ashes.
“I’m not a quitter,” he said. “I’m going to struggle, kick, scratch, bite and claw. I’m going to get back up there again.”
