Students at the University of California cancelled plans for a drinking party dubbed “Cinco de Drinko” … after protesters called it racially insensitive.

The party was to be held this weekend … ahead of Monday's Cinco de Mayo holiday celebrating Mexican heritage.

Off campus Cinco de Mayo drinking parties … where students wear sombreros and mustaches ... have also been a source of controversy at CSU, Chico.

According to the Associated Press, about 100 students protested and successfully scuttled plans for the event in Davis. Many of the students organizing the party worked at the on-campus Coffee House, where the demonstration took place.

UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said adding a mandatory diversity course might help prevent future controversies like this one.
