Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol are revving up their monitoring of traffic speeds though the construction zone on Hwy 99 in central Chico.
According to Caltrans’ press release, CHP officers will be monitoring the 50 mph speed limit zone during peak construction hours in the two-mile stretch of Hwy 99 between East 20th Street and East 1st Avenue. Motorists should also take note of construction vehicles entering and exiting the highway.
Over a year-and-a-half ago, the speed limit was reduced from 60 to 50 mph to ensure worker safety through the highway corridor. CHP estimates last year there were 53 vehicle accidents in this section of Hwy 99, including 18 accidents which involved injuries.
The construction is a $37.9 million project to construct new auxiliary lanes and sound walls.
