California Highway Patrol officials say what appeared to be a cut and dry case has taken a turn after investigators learned a man managed to elude capture following a high speed chase near Oroville earlier this month.
Around 9 p.m. April 7, Butte County deputies spotted a stolen Honda Accord, and when they tried to stop the vehicle the driver sped away. The driver sped away and deputies gave chase south on Lone Tree Road. Just past Cox Lane, the man driving the stolen car lost control and rolled the vehicle several times in a field. The body of 24-year-old Jeffery Stogsdill was found at the scene.
Deputies originally thought another person could have been in the car, but announced otherwise when a search of the area failed to turn up another suspect.
CHP investigators continued to investigate the case and on Thursday they announced there was in fact a second suspect, and he had been the driver.
An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for George Daniel Ellis III, 43, of Orland. Officers have come to believe that Ellis was driving at the time of the crash, and despite likely being injured he managed to escape.
Ellis, who is known to frequent Chico, Paradise and Oroville, is described as a white man, 6 feet 4 inches, 180-200 pounds, with dark hair and a goatee. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact local law enforcement.
