CHP launches investigation into Feather River death

A woman is dead and now a handful of law enforcement agencies are investigating how she ended up in the Feather River unconscious.

The Butte County sheriff's office was called to a possible suicide around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, and the woman was spotted underwater by a helicopter search team.

The woman, in her 40's or 50's, was pulled from the water around 5:40 p.m. and taken to Oroville Medical Center where she died overnight.

Law Enforcement agencies say that when the woman was found she was face down at the bottom of the river, which is considered unusual. When the body of a drowning victim is found it is usually face up, or on its side, sheriff's officials say.

According to the sheriff's office, an open investigation is underway and being handled by the CHP Oroville office. At this time officials are not ruling anything out.
