A single accident on Highway 99 has set off a chain reaction that slowed traffic to nearly a halt north of Chico. According to the California Highway Patrol, a man headed northbound on Highway 99 at Gaia Way hit a guardrail. As traffic in the northbound lane stopped, CHP investigators say a woman didn't notice that traffic had slowed, and she hit the vehicle in front of her, which set of a chain reaction. Investigators say, 4 vehicles were involved in that chain-reaction. The female driver and her son were hospitalized with moderate injuries. One other minor injury was reported.
Traffic was slowed for an hour, while investigators worked to clear the scene. The CHP says distracted driving likely caused the accidents.
