Chico woman arrested for carjacking, hit and run

A Chico woman is in custody after being suspected of carjacking a couple before wrecking the vehicle and attempting to flee the scene late Wednesday night.

The suspect, Francis Lewallen, 38, flagged down a couple driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla near the 1300 block of Mulberry Street. The victims exited their vehicle to assist the suspect and the suspect pushed the couple out of the way moved into the driver’s seat and fled in the vehicle. One of the victims sustained minor injuries during the assault.

Several minutes later, Chico Police received a report of a hit and run collision near the intersection of West Fifth Avenue and the Esplanade. Officers determined that the wrecked vehicle was the same one that was carjacked from the couple. The suspect was detained near the wrecked Toyota.

Lewallen was booked into Butte County Jail facing charges of vehicle theft by force, hit and run collision and leaving the scene of an accident.
