A water main break in Chico Thursday afternoon sent water gushing onto Mangrove Avenue, and has shut off the supply to a handful of nearby homes.
The incident happened around 2:45 p.m. at East 3rd Avenue and Mangrove Avenue where Pacific Gas and Electric crews are working to upgrade the natural gas line. As crews were digging in the area, a piece of asphalt fell from a backhoe and onto a water main, severing a six inch pipe.
California Water Service Company crews responded to the scene and quickly shut the water off.
Water has been shut off to 25 nearby homes while crews make repairs, which are expected to be completed by 10 p.m.
