A group pushing for the idea of district voting versus at large elections for future city council elections in Chico is headed back to the drawing board.
Earlier this week, the council voted four to three against even addressing the idea at a future city council meeting, after a citizen’s group requested the matter be placed on a future agenda for debate.
The group, called District’s for Chico, argues that the current at large election system is becoming too costly and shuts out representation to the city’s poorer neighborhoods.
Districts for Chico would like to see the city divided into separate districts where voters elect someone from their respective district.
The group is also calling for the mayor to be elected by a city wide vote.
Bob Speer, who has been spearheading the effort tells Action News Now the group is still deciding its next move.
