Wednesday night, the Chico City Council met to reaffirm it's ban on single-use, double-handle plastic bags. Nearly a dozen people stood up to voice their opinons at the podium before the vote. Most were in favor of the ban. Two were against it. In the end, the council voted 5-2 in favor. The city attorney will now draft the provision, and it will not take effect for one year. Chico grocers which will be affected include Raley's, Trader Joe's, Safeway, and Winco. They are encouraged to use the next year to offer promotions on reusable bags. Once the ban kicks in, grocers will charge $.10 on each paper bag they use. Council members say the ban is to encourage the commuter to carry reusable bags when shopping.
