The Chico Veterans Day Celebration is planned for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, at the Chico Elks Lodge.
Volunteers with the Chico Veterans Day Committee are excited about this years program, which will feature guest speaker Dan Roach, and Army combat veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a 1st Lieutenant, Airborne Ranger assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as a replacement in 1968.
Lt. Roach was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, a Soldiers Medal and three Bronze Stars. He is the author of the book "Gifts of War, Once Upon a rice Paddy." It's the story of a young officer who encounters unbelievable situatons as he learns his way through war. After Vietnam, Roach continued his career with the U.S. Forest Service. He retired in 2001. He also served with the California National Guard and Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Major.
The Veterans Day program will begin at 11 a.m., but the Chico Community Band will perform starting at 10:30 a.m. In addition to speakers and the pledge of allegience, there will be display tables with memorabilia and information from various military organizations. And after the program there will be a Free Lunch of beans and franks.
Veterans in attendance are encouraged to wear articles of service dress.
