The Chico Unified School District has confirmed they will be switching to a "middle-school" model beginning fall of 2015.
That means elementary will be K-5 and middle school will be 6-8th grades.
There are two main reasons for the change: Adapting to the state's common core curriculum, and implementing a long term facilities plan for the district.
The district's secondary education director says change is tough, but he's optimistic this change will be smooth and effective.
“It is a challenge for any family to think about their 11 or 12-year-olds at Jr. High, but I have faith our Jr. Highs will handle this transition effectively,” John Bohannon said.
Bohannon said Chico may be the only school system in Butte County that is still on K-6 configuration.
Letters to parents go out Monday.
