The Chico Unified School District voted Wednesday to adopt cheerleading as an official sport.
Cheerleading was discontinued as a sanctioned sport in the district in 2007, but cheerleading squads did not go away.
Chico cheerleading teams currently pay for their uniforms and travel expenses through fundraisers and parent contributions, but following last night's decision the school district will pay a stipend for a coach and assistant coach.
Each cheer team will now be required to compete in at least one sanctioned competition per semester and the team will be open to any student who can pass a physical.
