Chico teachers union approves tentative contract in narrow vote

Members of the Chico Unified Teachers Association voted Monday evening to accept the tentative contract. The vote was 60 percent to 40 percent. A total of 568 votes were cast out of 670 teachers in the Chico Unified School District.
After 14 months of stalled talks and a threat of a teachers strike, a deal was reached earlier this month to give teachers a retroactive three-percent pay raise for the current school year - and a six-percent raise next January 1st. The 60 percent to 40 percent approval is pretty narrow for a contract already agreed to by union negotiators. It followed a heated meeting Monday where many teachers expressed dissatisfaction with the deal. The school board will vote on the contract agreement on Wednesday.
