LA JOLLA – Gail Bassett's header was saved off the line in the final minute of a first half the Chico State women's team dominated. But the Wildcats started the second half with nothing to show for it.
The pain of that reality grew stronger when UC San Diego scored twice in the second half to beat Chico State 2-0 Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium on goals by Kiera Bocchino and Devon Roncoroni.
The Wildcats outshot UC San Diego 9-6 in the opening stanza, while earning a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. But Tritons goalkeeper Kacie Broadsky turned away three of those shots and one of her defender's cleared Bassett's header following Megan Tabler's corner kick off the line.
Carly Singer and Courtlynn Cerrito led Chico State with three shots apiece.
The Wildcats fell to 4-6-2 overall and 2-6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while UC San Diego improved to 5-4-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the CCAA.
Chico State will play its next four matches at home prior to wrapping up the regular season with two road affairs.
