Basketball season is coming fast - and for Chico State fans looking to get a sneak peek at the 2015-16 edition of the Wildcat women's team, they got their shot Sunday.
The 'Cats hosted the program's annual tip-off event at Acker Gym. Fans were allowed to sit in on a practice before a meet-and-greet ice cream social in the Acker Gym lobby.
Chico State is hoping to bounce back from a tough season in which they posted a 10-16 record and missed out on postseason play for the first time since 2003. The good news is - the Cats were young.
Eight players are returning, led by California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Freshman of the Year Whitney Branham. She averaged 10.5 points and 2.5 assists-per-game last season.
Guard/forward Brooke Bowen (9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds a game in 2014-15) is the 'Cats' lone senior. Guards Tyler Prange and Lauren Johnson and forwards Natalie Valenzuela, Haley Cremen and redshirt freshman McKena Barker, a Pleasant Valley High product, are back as well.
Head Coach Brian Fogel brought in five newcomers to complement the returners.
Among them are guard Sherise Porchia (a transfer from Division I Boise State), junior college standouts Michelle Townsend (Chabot CC) and Kayla Taylor (Diablo Valley CC) and high school stars Irie Stokes (Upland HS) and Sammy DeHart (Nevada Union HS).
The 'Cats' 2015-16 regular season opener is Nov. 13 when they host the two-day Coslet Classic and square off with Notre Dame de Namur.
