A Chico State student who allegedly caused a fatal crash by texting and driving will face trial on vehicular manslaughter charges.

21-year-old Tyler Burrone appeared in Tehama County court today for a preliminary hearing. Burrone was arrested in April of this year for allegedly texting and driving when his truck, towing a horse trailer slammed into a Nissan driven by 31-year-old Katie Ramsey of Gerber.

The impact from Burrone's truck pushed Ramsey's Nissan into the path of a big rig, her 5-year-old son Gunner was killed in the crash.

Investigators say they have evidence that proves Burrone was texting at the time of the accident.

In court today the lead investigating officer took the stand, saying Burrone told police he saw Ramsey brake suddenly and applied his brakes, then tried to veer right and avoid her vehicle. He also testified that Burrone told officers he did not receive text message until after the accident.

The big rig driver testified and claimed he saw Ramsey's car in the south bound lane, but did not know if a blinker was on or not. The truck driver told the court he saw Burrone's truck and it appeared as though Burrone never looked up as he slammed into Ramsey's Nissan.

Burrone will be in court again on September 15.
