Chico State's Speech and Debate team is already having a big year, with big expectations ahead.

The team qualified two competitors for a national tournament in March at their first tournament in San Francisco State late last month.

Last weekend, the team had additional success at two separate events in Portland and Santa Rosa.

Head Coach Sue Peterson says a strong start to the year paves the way so that her speech and debaters can qualify in more categories as the season progresses.

Compared to last year, where a lot of members came and then left the team, she says a stronger, more committed team is in place this year.

"A lot of them just get bit by the competitive bug and love it and keep coming back and wanna go to nationals and participate and really invest themselves in it," Peterson said.

On October 24th, the Speech and Debate team will take over city hall downtown for the Chico Great Debate.
