It is with great sadness we report that junior Aaron Drange passed away yesterday, July 15, in Chico. He was 20. Chico Fire Department reportedly responded to a 911 call between 7 and 7:30 p.m. yesterday and found Aaron unresponsive in a swimming pool in an apartment complex on West 4th Avenue. He was transported to Enloe Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The drowning is not being investigated as a crime by the Chico Police Department.
Aaron was born March 28, 1994, and was from Rosemead in Los Angeles County. He enrolled at CSU, Chico in fall 2012. He was a recording arts major with a minor in the Great Books general education pathway. Aaron played saxophone and piano and sang. He was heavily involved in the music department, performing in the Chamber Singers, A Cappella Choir, Jazz X-Press, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and other groups. Aaron also sang in the Bidwell Presbyterian Church choir and had a band called the Upstairs Neighbors.
"Aaron was a superstar in the music department," said Joe Alexander, music professor and associate dean, College of Humanities and Fine Arts. "He was good at everything he did, and everybody loved him."
"Aaron was the nicest young man - well respected and admired by professors and fellow students," said music professor and choral director David Scholz. "He was a great person and talented musician. This is a terrible tragedy."
We will pass along more information, including any information about services, as it becomes available. The University flag will be lowered tomorrow in Aaron's memory.
