It's been fifty years since the Chico State men's golf team last won a national championship, but that drought could be coming to an end this year. With just one tournament left before the postseason gets going, the Wildcats are rolling. In their eight tournaments this season, Chico has won four, while placing second in the other four. They're also currently ranked as the number one team in the nation by Golfstat.
"This is the best team we've had since I've been here," Chico State coach T.L. Brown said. "
The 'Cats are led by senior Lee Gearhart, who has won three individual titles so far this season, and now has six over his career.
"I've just been doing my thing, playing my style of golf. It's been good enough to get some individual victories, but I'm just happy I can play well for our team and lead us to a couple of these team victories," Gearhart said.
With the way things are going it wouldn't be shocking to see the 'Cats hoisting the national championship trophy at the end of the season. As a matter of fact, these guys expect to be doing just that.
"Are expectation this season was to win the national championship, there was no doubt about it, we're not shying away from it. This year's team has gone out already head to head against the best teams in the nation and beat them handily. We got a great shot at winning it," Brown said.
