A Chico State organization is working to inform students on how Chico's Social Host Ordinance can affect them.
The Chico State Campus Alcohol and Drug Education Center is passing out door hangers warning residents who host parties that they are responsible for the safety of all their guests, and listing the fines that violators could be forced to pay.
The Social Host Ordinance was adopted by the Chico City Council in May and aims to cut down underage drinking. The law will crack down on underage drinking by imposing liability on people hosting or responsible for events on private property where alcohol is possessed and consumed by minors.
Chico residents face a $500 fine for a first offense and $1,000 for the second violation within 12 months.
"CADEC" also handed out nearly 500 door hangers at the beginning of the school year in the south and north campus area.
