With just a few days left before the end of the semester, graduating Chico State students are doing last minute preparations for the big day.. A day they've been working toward their entire lives.
Graduating Student Elizabeth Rodriguez says, "I've been working for this for a long time.. So for it to finally be here is great." Kayla Tescallo, also graduating, says, "Oh it's definitely bitter sweet. I'm going to miss all my friends so much, but moving on."
This year more than 2,700 students will be walking during graduation. Which means roughly 10,000 people, per day, will be visiting from out of town. Christian Michaels Owner, Christian Michaels says, "It's a nice help to our local economy and it is busy. We've got people from Florida, people from l.a., people from all over coming to graduation."
Family and friends visiting for graduation will put more than 20,000 people in Chico hotels and restaurants over the weekend. The Vagabond Inn on Main street has every room on site booked. Vagabond employee Justine Konno says, "I think Chico's going to be super busy. I know we've been packed/booked since I think November."
It's the same story for pretty much every other hotel in town. In fact most people book a hotel room for graduation weekend more than six months in advance. And hotels aren't the only ones who are packed.. Local restaurants see the same trend. "It's going to be another busy year. We've been here right around 15 years and it's always 100-percent full." Michaels says in fact many restaurants will see a non-stop rush, morning, noon and night, and then stay open late for cocktails.. Inviting any and all who come to visit for the special weekend.
Graduation will take place this Saturday and Sunday at the Chico State football field beginning both days at 9 a.m.
