A new ranking of the nation’s most sustainable college farms says Chico State’s University Farm is the best of the best.

University Farm was recently ranked number one in College Values online list of the top sustainable college farms.

To create the list, College Values measured the sustainability of the top 30 from its initial pool of 100 college farms. Points were awarded for farm size, being certified organic, having animal components, providing academic courses on the farm and selling to campus dining halls.

University Farm is 800-acres of varied farmland supported by 15 full-time staff members and 35-40 students. Animal units include a beef unit, an organic dairy unit, sheep and goat unit, and a swine unit, and are operated by a staff technician, a lead student manager and three or four student employees.

Butte College, which has an 80-acre farm that includes a fruit orchard and vineyard also made this list, grabbing the 30th spot.
