Students returning for spring semester at Chico State are also returning to some sobering news.

Chico Police say 18-year-old Freshman Nick Castellanos was killed after being struck by a car Friday night at the intersection of Walnut and Fifth Street.

Chico State's Housing Director says he lived at Lassen Hall, where he was well-known and part of a tight-knit community.

Freshman Reed Carter lived two doors down from Castellanos and says they were both part of a group known as "the boys."

He learned of his friend's death Sunday night.

"To come back and think you're going to see all the same faces, it is hard," said Carter. "It's going to be completely different. Cause it's not the same group of guys. There's going to be somebody else there to replace him, and it's not him."

Chico State's Joe Wills says a campus-wide e-mail will be sent out tomorrow morning.

Counseling services will be available for anyone that needs them.

Chico Police Lt. David Britt says an autopsy will show whether or not Castellanos had any alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.
