From the high desert, to the North Valley, to Orange County, Chico State distance coach Gary Towne trekked all over the Golden State to secure a solid 2013 women’s cross country recruiting class he introduced Thursday: West Valley High School’s (Cottonwood) Hannah Dorman, Jacquie Adams of Foothill High School in Santa Ana; and Madison Grenier of Paraclete HighSchool in Lancaster.
Adams is one of the top distance talents to come out of the Orange County area this year. She finished fourth at the Southern Section Championships with an impressive 17:36 clocking at the storied Mt. SAC course as a freshman and went on to finish 11th in the state.
She won four straight league titles on the track in the 800 meters and boasts personal records (PRs) of 2:15 in the 800 meters, 5:03 in the 1,600 meters, and 10:58 in the 3,200 meters, which are some of the top PRs ever recorded by an incoming Chico State recruit.
“We’re very pleased to have Jacquie aboard for the coming four years,” said Towne. “Her list of accomplishments and best marks stack up nicely when compared to some of the top runners to put on a Chico State uniform.”
Grenier is one of Paraclete’s most decorated distance runners ever. Her 17:35 time in the 3-mile Seaside Invitational stands out. She also placed 15th at the Southern California Cross Country Championships. Grenier’s 2:16.2 PR in the 800 meters at the Pasadena Games is a Paraclete program record.
“We really enjoyed getting to know Madison during her campus visit, and I’m confident that she’ll become a great part of our team in the coming years,” said Towne. “Madison has a great natural gift for running and we’re excited to help her to explore her potential.”
Dorman is arguably the North Section’s most talented distance athlete, having finished among the top three in all three CIF Northern Section Cross Country Championships she’s competed in.
More recently, Dorman ran the section’s fastest 1,600 meters this year while winning the West Valley Invitational. She also won the Northern Section 3,200-meter title on the track with a PR of 11:08.
“We’re extremely pleased to have Hannah as a part of our distance running family here at Chico State. I’ve been watching Hannah dominate the North section since her freshman year of high school, so it’s exciting to know that she’s planning to keep her talents close to home,” said Towne. “We have a strong tradition of success with North Section alums, so I like our chances with Hannah as a part of our team.”
The Trio joins a cross country program boasting five consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) crowns and 11top-10 NCAA Championship finishes in a row.
The Wildcats are scheduled to open their season on the Sun Dodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash., Sept. 14. Local fans have a great chance to see the team up close when it hosts the CCAA Championships at Hooker OakRecreation Area in Chico on Oct. 26.
