Chico Salvation Army Helps Needy Families

The holidays can be a tough time for some families, especially those that are just trying to make ends meet. The Salvation Army reaches out to people in need to ensure that they are able to put food on the table and presents under the tree. Friday marked the end of a 3 day distribution to more than 500 needy families in Chico. Each household received a turkey dinner with all the fixings and toys for the kids; donations that will go a long way for people that need it the most.

Chico resident Marsha Grinstead says, “This is a wonderful opportunity for my granddaughter being a young teen mom to get donations and sign up for Christmas to help our family."

The annual giveaway is made possible by donations from local businesses and residents, which makes the gifts that much more special. The holidays are an important time of year for the Salvation Army because volunteers get just as much out of it as the families they help.

Lt. Connie Hall says, "Just to see the joy on the families' faces when they realize that these gifts are for them from people throughout the community is an amazing thing."

Enloe Medical Center is one of the many organizations that contributed to this year's event. Hospital representatives made a generous donation Friday by dropping off 20 boxes of food to be given away.
