A federal grand jury has indicted a 44-year-old Chico man, who used to be a South Lake Tahoe Fire Captain, for the sexual exploitation of minors.

Mark Wygant was formally charged Thursday with Sexual Exploitation and Attempted Sexual Exploitation of Minors, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Wygant was arrested Jan. 29 after federal agents say they found a flash drive at the South Lake Tahoe fire station with more than 5,000 images of child pornography they believe belonged to Wygant.

FBI special agent Glenn Norling said in an affidavit the photos on the flash drive date from March 2011 to December 2014.

On February 5, South Lake Tahoe city officials announced that Wygant had resigned from his position with the fire department.

Wygant is also listed as a program director with Chico based California Emergency Response Training, which according to its website provides a variety of firefighter training courses.
