The theme of World Cancer Day 2016 is "We can, I can". The idea is that everyone, as a collective or as individuals, can do their part to take some sort of action to help reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.

Bottom line, it encourages people to do what they can to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

One way to do that is to get involved with your local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

In Chico, the ACS is gearing up for the annual Relay for Life in the Spring. This year it is scheduled for May 14th and 15th, and teams are encouraged to sign up now.

The event is a 24 hour relay around the track at Pleasant Valley High School, with teams having at least one person walking the track at all times. There are information booths, speakers, a survivor lap and a Luminaria Ceremony to honor loved ones who have died of cancer.

It is a fundraiser to help the American Cancer Society in its research to find a cure.
