Chico power outage brings Christmas rush to a stand-still

The Christmas rush became a lot more stressful for hundreds of shoppers in Chico Tuesday evening after a power outage shut-down several major stores in the south end of town. Right around 5 p.m. power went out along East 20th Street and to the south, affecting Toys R Us, Target and Walmart and numerous other businesses including restaurants like Applebee’s. It meant Christmas shoppers were kept out of those stores at a very busy time. And shoppers already inside the stores were forced to wait to check out for well over an hour until power was restored.

A PG&E spokesman told Action News Now there was an underground cable failure near Forest Avenue and Baney Lane. Power was fully restored for most customers by around 6:45. The Chico Mall was never affected.
