The Chico Police Officers Association has taken out a full page advertisement in today’s Chico Enterprise-Record.
In an open letter to Chico citizens, the Police Association writes about challenges the department is facing with acquiring and retaining qualified officers. The letter calls out City Manager Nakamura for implementing recent reductions in pay and benefits. The letter points to a difficult situation in Hemet, California, where Nakamura previously held the City Manager position, and warns that Chico could face similar circumstances.
An excerpt from the letter reads “Over the past few years our city and Police Department has been facing challenges that we have never faced before. Our staffing is the lowest it has been in over 20 years and we have had such units like the Detective Bureau, Traffic, Street Crimes, Mounted Patrol, and School Resource Officers dismantled.”
Action News Now will have more on this tonight.
