Chico police suspect alcohol played factor in fatal pedestrian crash

Chico police say they suspect the driver and the pedestrian he struck and killed in the south campus area Saturday night might have been drinking alcohol.

The driver, who has been identified as 23-year-old Chico State senior Juan Campos, spoke with police after a crash that killed another student, 21-year-old Nickolas Klein, and was then taken for chemical testing.

The accident remains under investigation and charges will be determined once the Butte County coroner's office finishes their examination and the driver's blood-alcohol-content is known.

Police say Klein was attempting to cross the street at the intersection of West Seventh and Chestnut Streets Saturday night when he was hit head-on by Campos' Chevy Trail Blazer. Campos then crashed into two vehicles.
