19-year-old Anthony Beck of Chico was arrested today for hit and run, vehicle theft, and felony warrants for possession of stolen property.

Just after 10:45 a.m. Chico Police officers were called to 5th and Arbutus Avenues to a report of a major traffic accident. Witnesses told responding officers the driver of the vehicle who caused the collision had fled the scene on foot and was last seen running towards Mangrove Avenue. Officers spotted the suspect running across Mangrove then south into the alley west of Pep Boys automotive.

Officers chased the suspect until he stopped south of Pep Boys. After reportedly refusing to comply with their demands, officers struck the suspect twice with a baton. After the suspect was taken into custody, officers learned he had two active felony warrants for possession of stolen property.

At the scene of the accident, it was determined Beck was traveling north on Arbutus in a stolen Ford Excursion. Officers speculate Beck had stolen the vehicle from Arbutus and Filbert Avenues. The department further speculates Beck was traveling at high speed and failed to stop at the stop sign on 5th Avenue. As a result Beck collided with a BMW traveling west, careened into a parked vehicle on Arbutus, then slammed into a second parked car and finally flipped over and crashed into a fence. Although no serious injuries were reported, the department indicated a woman and her grandchild were moments away from getting into the first parked vehicle which was struck.

Beck was treated at Enloe Medical Center for minor injuries suffered in the crash and later booked into the Butte County Jail.
