One officer with the Chico Police department is being recognized for his efforts when it comes to eliminating homelessness in the community.

Stairways Programming helps those struggling with abuse get back on their feet.

Sergeant Zuschin said the award speaks well for the leadership the police department has and the direction they are headed in the community.

“This is a community effort and receiving this award is just recognition for my part in that effort and I’m very proud to have received it,” Zuschin said.

Both on and off the clock, Sergeant Scott Zuschin mentored many and those staying at Stairways voted for him to be this year’s recipient. Stairways Founding Board Member Joe Montes said they are lucky to have as understanding of an officer as Zuschin.

“I think it's much more meaningful, it's much more spectacular and of course there's an obvious relationship that they have with officer Zuschin, so it's wonderful and meaningful.”

Stairways Programming can house up to 65 people at its location on West Second Street.

They are currently serving 44 residents.
